Pilgrimage by Carlisle Floyd - a note about the music

A work more ambitious than anything outside his operas: Pilgrimage, is a twenty-minute, five-movement solo cantata on serious biblical texts, for low voice, conceived for and dedicated to Mack Harrell. The cycle spans a tonal world of D Minor/D Major, with a carefully constructed emotional arc.

The first two songs suggest a grouping of '“sin and expiation,” the third balances the cycle, as the singer makes peace with himself before God. The writing is syllabic, but lyrical, a return to Susannah’s tonal world. Songs four and five embrace acceptance and repose. The cycle concludes with words from St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans as the music drifts back into an idyllic Susannah mood, all torment and searching daring away; anything, in fact, as the text affirms, that might “separate me from the love of God.” - Thomas Holliday

In 1850, New Orleans became an Archdiocese, and in 1851 Archbishop Antoine Blanc blessed the newly expanded and restored Cathedral. Elements of the earlier churches are included in the present structure, and there have been many additions and improvements made throughout the years.

About the Old Ursuline Convent

The Old Ursuline Convent building we see today was authorized by King Louis XV of France in 1745 and completed in 1752 or 1753. The building is approximately 160 x 48 feet (about 7,700 square feet per floor). In addition to its use as a convent-school and archbishop's residence, the building has also served as a Catholic boy's school, the city's first public school, and the seat of the Louisiana legislature (1831-1834). The adjoining St. Mary's Church dates from 1845.

The Ursuline nuns moved away from this site in 1824, but the main building has long been known as the Old Ursuline Convent. The convent is the third of three buildings that the Ursuline Nuns occupied in the French Quarter.

About St. Mary's Church

Saint Mary's Catholic Church (named by Archbishop Shulte in March of 1994) was built in 1845 as the Chapel of the Archbishops during the administration of Bishop Antoine Blanc. The ground on which the chapel was constructed originally was the site of the Ursuline Convent and chapel dating to the arrival of the Ursulines in New Orleans. After the Ursulines moved down river in 1824, the site became the residence of the Archbishop of New Orleans. The church has born several names through its existence. It was originally called Sainte Marie de l'Archeveche and later Holy Trinity. Later, it became St. Mary's Italian Church, the official Italian parish of the Archdiocese, with services in the Italian language for the many Sicilian and Italian immigrants who settled in the lower French Quarter. The church has now been named St. Mary's Church and it is part of the Antoine Blanc Memorial and Archdiocesan Archives housed at the Vieux Carre location.

About Kingsway Mansion

Kingsway is a legendary 12,000 square foot private residence designed beautifully by Los Angeles based LM Pagano, architect Wayne Troyer and owner Sean Cummings.

Built in 1848, Kingsway has been owned by all manner of local characters. Among the colorful cast was Prohibition-era restaurateur Count Leon Arnaud Cezenave and Germaine Wells, his debaucherous, Easter parade founding daughter. Currently, her many Queen of Carnival gowns are displayed at the family’s namesake Arnaud’s Restaurant. During the 1990’s the property housed perhaps the most prolific recording studio in the world, Kingsway Studio, owned and operated by esteemed producer Daniel Lanois. Venerable names in the industry flocked here, among them U2, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Pearl Jam, Peter Gabriel, R.E.M., Robbie Robertson, Sheryl Crow, Iggy Pop, Blind Melon, Cowboy Mouth and other respected artists. Nicolas Cage later owned the property, filming “Sonny” at the house in 2002. In 2004, Sean Cummings bought and renovated Kingsway. Says Cummings, “The architectural scale is the great luxury to me. In it, the Italian monastery table, fertility bed from Senegal, patinaed bar, the mesmerizing Swarovski Cascade Chandelier (floor-to-ceiling) and other elements tell a joyful story about this city and the mosaic of humanity that created it.”
